Code2040 Vision and Strategy for 2025 and Beyond: Pathways of Economic Mobility

By Mimi Fox Melton

Since our founding in 2012, Code2040 has been dedicated to creating networks of support and pathways into the tech industry for Black and Latinx technologists. Over the last decade, we’ve served as a gateway for over one thousand Black and Latinx technologists to enter the industry. Through trainings and partnerships, we’ve impacted hiring practices, management, and company cultures at tech industries around the country. We’ve been nimble, adapting our programs and partnerships to fit the needs of our community through periods of economic uncertainty, pandemic upheaval, and political backlash against racial equity.

Though we are facing a challenging and uncertain landscape for nonprofits, we remain steadfast in our mission and continue to hold the door open for Black and Latinx technologists. Our people are imperative to building a just technological future, and Code2040 will not let this be the lost generation of technologists. In response to the needs of our community and to the current economic and political climate, Code2040’s focus is on rebuilding the pathways of economic mobility that lie in ruins.

We’re redoubling our efforts to support early career Black and Latinx talent, and we’re recommitting to standing in the gap left by the tech industry’s divestment from racial equity. In 2025, and over the next three years, you can expect to see Code2040 shaping the future of tech, gathering our people together, and empowering Black and Latinx technologists to lead in the innovation economy.

The Next Three Years of Code2040

The number one request from our community is for more job preparedness and support to stand in the gap and create bridges to employment. In addition to meeting immediate needs, we are committed to imagining and working for a better future by leveraging the power of our community to be a part of the movement to democratize information, ensure full access to technology for all, and build technological solutions that fuel social justice movements across the globe.

Code2040 is shaping tech and activating over a decade of experience and relationships towards the following initiatives:

  • Building a just technological future through community
  • Creating strong pathways of economic mobility for early-career Black and Latinx technologists
  • Working to build power with tech workers

As it is currently written, the legacy of the tech industry is one of bolstering white supremacy and systemic racism. Yet, we know science and technology can offer us a different path. Our imaginations are powerful tools, and we can use technology to create more possibilities. The power of being in community is that we stand in the gap for one another, flanking each other as we navigate the inequities and imbalanced distribution of power in our industry. Code2040 is bringing our people together, and holding the door open for Black and Latinx technologists to enter and shape change in the tech industry.

Join us, read more about our next three years here. Together, we can shape the legacy of technology toward justice.

On May 8th at 9am PT/12pm ET, join Code2040’s CEO Mimi Fox Melton and Program Director Selene Chala for grounding and hope through these times.
