Mentor Voices: Embracing Limits and Balancing Opportunities
Hi everyone, my name is Cindy Hernandez, and I’ve been part of the tech industry for nearly a decade. I started my journey as an intern during college and worked my way up to becoming a Senior Software Engineer at Intuit. Today, I’m on a career break, taking time to focus on personal goals, and want to share with you one of my biggest lessons: understanding and honoring my limits.
The Challenge
When you’re passionate about your work and eager to grow, it’s easy to say “yes” to every opportunity. Early in my career, there were many exciting, fast-paced opportunities—all at once. It felt like a whirlwind of possibility, and I wanted to grab everything. Giving too much of yourself without boundaries can quickly lead to burnout. Knowing your limits isn’t a sign of weakness—it’s a necessity for sustainability. Another opportunity, as good or even better, will come along when the timing is right.
Finding the Balance
I realized the best way to give my best was to connect with myself first. I had to understand my own priorities, my “cans and can'ts,” and focus on the goals that truly mattered to me.
It wasn't always easy, but saying, “not right now” or “this doesn’t align with my goals,” gave me the balance I needed to grow without losing myself in the process.
Lessons for the Journey
As someone who’s navigated the challenges of being a Latina in tech, I know how easy it is to feel the pressure to prove ourselves—to say yes to everything because we want to make our families proud or seize every opportunity we didn’t have growing up. But here’s what I’ve learned:
- Know your limits. They’re your guide to balancing growth and well-being.
- It’s okay to say, “I can’t right now.” It’s not the end of the road, and it doesn’t define your worth.
- Be patient with yourself. As minorities, we often feel like we have to take every bite of the opportunities presented to us. But trust that the snacks will be there again—sometimes even better!
So, to all of you Fellows: take the amazing bites, savor them, and don’t feel guilty for leaving some for later. Your journey is yours to pace. Opportunities will keep coming, and with time and patience, you’ll create a career and life that feels both fulfilling and sustainable.
Thank you for letting me share my story. I hope it reminds you to value yourself as much as the work and opportunities in front of you.
