Responsible AI Takes All of US

By Mimi Fox Melton

The trajectory of AI is one of the defining issues of our time. From the environmental degradation fueled by AI data centers to shaping access to social services, AI is already dramatically shaping our lives with disproportionate impacts on the most marginalized among us. Yet, we know AI’s power over our lives and future is not inevitable: people hold the power to shape the trajectory of this technology.

Over the last decade, Code2040 has built a community of over 10,000 Black and Latinx technologists. Now, we’re mobilizing our community to be part of a movement to democratize information, ensure full access to technology for all, and build technological solutions that fuel social justice movements across the globe. If we want to see AI developed toward our collective good, it will take all of us coming together, sharing skills, and holding the tech industry accountable to design a future where all of us are thriving.

On August 5, we’re launching Critical Conversations with Code2040: Artificial Intelligence to strategize toward ethical AI. In a moment of unchecked, unregulated and environmentally devastating growth of AI, we are inviting technologists to consider the social and political implications of rapidly developing tech tools. We know our influence over technology can build us different paths.

Join us for this Responsible AI workshop series. During this workshop series, participants will: Learn about the history of AI and its varied uses today. Share skills and resources for shaping the development of AI, including collaboratively designing a Responsible AI project. Envision just technological futures together.

At Code2040, we believe it is possible for the tech industry to design more livable futures. When I talk to our Fellows and community members, many are enthusiastic about the possibilities of AI. They are invested in designing technologies that create ease for their families and communities. They are excited about working in AI because they understand the potential to design AI systems in alignment with life-affirming values and collective social benefits. The possibilities and perils of AI are defined by the technologists shaping it.

As it is currently written, the legacy of the tech industry is one of bolstering white supremacy and systemic racism. Yet, we know science and technology can offer us different paths. Our imaginations are powerful tools, and we can use technology to create more possibilities. Join us for Critical Conversations with Code2040: Artificial Intelligence. Together, we can shape the legacy of technology toward justice.
